Metalinker.org

  • Q: I'd like to participate. How do I begin?

Metalinker.org is an umbrella project for a lot of software that supports RFC 5854 (Metalink XML format for describing downloads) and other related technology.

There are many things we need help in, from advocacy (getting a site or project to support Metalink) to small bugs or features to adding Metalink support to a program like a download manager or Firefox.

      Advocacy helps!

Many sites and projects already use Metalink (Fedora, openSUSE, Ubuntu, OpenOffice.org, cURL, etc). But many might not even know about Metalinks. If a site or project has large downloads, or many mirrors, then using Metalinks might help their users.

You can contact sites, projects, or download apps on their mailing lists, IRC, or email, to let them know about Metalink.

Also, many Metalink apps are already packaged, but some are not. It would be great to have them available on all distributions.

We need people to download version 0.4.5 and make sure the frobulator still frobulates correctly.

Adding Metalink support to Firefox and Chrome

Over 60 apps support Metalink. But no MAJOR web browser does yet. We reach many people and make their lives easier, but without reaching as many as we can with support in a major browser, there is still work to do.

We need a C++ coder to add Metalink support to Firefox and Chrome. It would probably help if the person was familiar with the Mozilla or Chrome codebase. It will probably be quicker to add support in stages, and Chrome seems to move faster.

I don't know how to get started with internationalizing my app.

Bug 392 about printing was filed five years ago, and I don't even know if printing still works.

I want help from a C coder writing a Maildir patch for Alpine.
